M15 Frederiksberg DEN – Jonathan Mridha prevails in all-Scandinavian affair

The Swedish No. 5 seed stopped Danish wild card entry Benjamin Hannestad in the semi-finals in three sets.

Top seeded Markus Eriksson set the all-Swedish final with a three-set win versus August Holmgren from Denmark.

Twenty-six-year-old Mridha gained three breaks in the title match and lost two service games to succeed 6-3, 7-6 after two hours and nine minutes. The Stockholm native lifted his third singles trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour and earned €1,944 in price money.

“I think I was pretty good mentally throughout the whole week. I had a dip in the semifinal yesterday against Benjamin. But besides that I think I was mentally trying to play every point and stay in the match no matter what the score was. I think that’s why I played some good tennis this week,” Mridha said after the match.

Asked about his title win, he added: “It’s important. The ITF is not doing a great job supporting the players outside top 200 because there are no points in this tournament more or less. It’s 10 points for the winner which is a disaster. Six points for the finalist and four points for the semis. There’s no way to keep up with the Challenger Tour or the ATP Tour. And it’s really tough to get there if the point system is like this. You have to win every week if you wanna go somewhere.”
