Dambrosi To Face Fonio In All-Italian Final In Opatija

Italians Giacomo Dambrosi and Giovanni Fonio will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Istarska Rivijera in Opatija, the third and final stop of a three-week clay-court swing in Istria, Croatia. The ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event is held at the Tennis Club Opatija.

No. 7 seed Fonio defeated 19-year-old Ukrainian qualifier Oleksandr Ovcharenko 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday morning on Court 3. The 22-year-old capitalized on four of his six break-point chances to advance after one hour and 32 minutes.

Meanwhile over on Court 2, Dambrosi upset top seed Corentin Denolly of France, champion of last week’s tournament in Rovinj, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 19-year-old qualifier outpointed his rival 63-62 after one hour and 48 minutes.

Fonio is bidding for his third title on the ITF World Tennis Tour, his second of season following his triumph in Antaly, Turkey in January. Dambrosi will appear in his first championship match. The two Italians will meet for the first time.

On Friday, Martin Damm and Alexander Rybakov from the United States took the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds battled past Alen Rogic Hadzalic of Croatia and Matic Spec from Slovenia, 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-7. The encounter lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

The Istarska Rivijera is Croatia’s oldest international tennis tournament series and is taking place for the 49th time this year.
