Meligeni Alves Wins First Challenger Tournament At Sao Paulo

Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil clinched his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The World No. 306 defeated No. 6 seed Frederico Ferreira Silva from Portugal 6-2, 7-6(1) in Sunday’s singles final of the $52,080 Sao Paulo Open Tennis.

In the pair’s first meeting and in front of about 200 spectators at the Clube Hipico Santo Amaro in Sao Paulo, Meligeni Alves capitalized on four of his seven break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 37 minutes.

The 22-year-old pocketed $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points and will conclude his season at the $52,080 Campeonato Internacional de Tenis in Campinas, his home tournament and the final Challenger event held on American soil this year. Meligeni Alves will open his campaign against a qualifier.

“I really wanted to end the year inside the Top 250 in the world to be able to compete in the qualifying at Grand Slams. I will compete in another tournament next week and I want to improve my ranking even more,” said Meligeni, who will be ranked on a new career high at World No. 242 on Monday.

“It has been great to have the support from my girl-friend and my family here. There is also a reason for a another celebration this weekend, as my sister won a tournament in Egypt today.” Carolina Meligeni Alves lifted the trophy of the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 event in Cairo the same day.
