KOBLENZ, February 17, 2020

The fourth edition of the Koblenz Open kicked off on Monday at the CGM Arena highlighted by a first-round win of wild card entry Milan Welte. Playing his only second main draw match at Challenger level, the 18-year-old German upset former World No. 72 Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Welte, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open boys’ competition and clinched two titles on the ITF Junior World Tennis Tour last year, withstood 13 aces and broke Pavlasek’s serve four times to secure his first match win on the ATP Challenger Tour after one hour and 55 minutes. The current World No. 1,046 will next take on No. 7 seeded Frenchman Quentin Halys.

Another German wild card entry also found his way into the second round of the €46,600 hard-court event, as Louis Wessels beat compatriot Peter Heller 6-3, 6-2 to set a clash with the tournament’s top seed Yannick Maden. The 21-year-old Bielefeld native capitalized on three of his five break-point chances to advance in one hour and eight minutes.
