NÜRNBERG, January 9, 2020

Matchmaker Event GmbH has sold its license for the WTA International tournament in Nürnberg, which has been held since 2013 on clay the week before Roland Garros.

“We really didn’t take this decision lightly and tried to hold the tournament in Nürnberg until the last minute. In the end, however, after the withdrawal of our main sponsor NÜRNBERGER Insurance, we were unable to put the event on a solid economic basis that would have given this tournament a perspective for the future. So our decision was without alternative,” tournament director Sandra Reichel comments on the sale of the license.

The new license holder will inform where the tournament will take place in due course. According to different media, the event could probably be moved to Cologne.

The last champion of the Nürnberger Versicherungscup was Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, who won the final against Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia in May 2019.
