ATP 250 Munich 2015 – Day 5

Unfortunately rain didn’t stop on Friday and no matches could be played

MUNICH, May 1, 2015

Most of the tennis fans, who have ever attended a tennis event, will know this scenario. Bad weather, play is postponed or suspended due to rain. This is what happened on a wash-out-Friday at the BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich.

It was May Day – bank holiday in Germany. Everything seemed to be perfect for an exciting day packed with quarterfinal tennis action. But bad news arrived early this day, when Munich’s citizens had a look out of their window in the morning. It was raining cats and dogs without interruption.

Top-seed Andy Murray was scheduled to face Lukas Rosol as well as the local’s favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber taking on David Goffin, but no play was possible. The German took his time to speak to the fans and the media at an open press conference, in which he told about the difficulties for the players to deal with these conditions.

“You have to be ready at any time. Rain can stop and then you have to go on the court. That’s not easy,” Kohlschreiber explained. “But conditions here are great for us. You can pass the time by playing cards. We are having a group with Flo Mayer, Tobias Summerer and Jan-Lennard Struff. Unfortunately, all of them have already returned to the hotel. So you also play a bit with your mobile, which you actually shouldn’t do too much, as it often confuses yourself. Best things are to relax, maybe having a nap and getting some physical treatment.”

“Of course for the fans it’s a pity. I heard that the day was sold out, which is really bitter. Nonetheless, it is an outdoor event and we need a bit of dry conditions to play. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case today.”
