MUNICH, March 24, 2017
The organizers of the BMW Open by FWU announced Friday at the BMW Group Classic in Munich the entry list for the 102nd edition of the International Tennis Championships of Bavaria, held from 29 April to 7 May 2017 at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos.
World No. 11, Gael Monfils, is leading the line-up and will be joined by his fellow FWU Team members Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain and Italian Fabio Fognini.
“We are very confident that Gael will entertain the crowd with some spectacular tennis action this year. He is a benefit for every tournament and we are really looking forward to seeing him on our courts,” tournament director Patrik Kühnen stated.
Germany’s top ranked players will also come to Munich, led by ATP NextGen star Alexander Zverev. The teenager eyes winning his third trophy on the ATP World Tour following his triumphs in St. Petersburg last year and Montpellier earlier this season.
“As I didn’t make it to the final in the last three years, I really want to fight for the title this year,” Zverev is eager to compete in Munich.
Three time BMW Open champion Philipp Kohlschreiber will try to defend his title, joined by fellow countrymen Jan-Lennard Struff, Dustin Brown as well as Florian Mayer.
This year’s special guest, however, will be Tommy Haas. The former World No. 2, who recently took over the position as tournament director at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, is playing is last season as a professional tennis player and entered the main draw via protected ranking. Haas will get his very own “Tommy Haas Day” on Monday, May 1, where he will compete his first round match on centre court at 3:30 pm local time.
New Record Prize Money
The tournament’s total financial commitment will be €540,307 with the singles champion taking away €89,945 in prize money, 250 Emirates ATP ranking points, a brand new BMW i8 as well as a traditional Bavarian Lederhose, which was presented frozen inside an ice-block.
“The BMW Open by FWU is the toughest clay court tournament in the world. Players had to cope with varying temperatures from minus 5 to plus 20 degrees Celsius last year. In order to win the title, they need to get the ice melt, eventually having the chance to present the Lederhose on Centre Court on the final day of the event,” tournament organizer Michael Mronz told and added that all of the spectators can look forward to fantastic tennis matches throughout the seven days.
