Two unseeded players went head to head on Sunday’s final at the eleventh edition of the ATA-TRENTINO US-$ 15.000 Future event in Trento when Philip Bester defeated Quentin Halys winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

In front of about 300 spectators, the only 18-year-old Frenchman had the better start when he gained his first three break points of the match in the eighth game and eventually capitalized on the third. After 34 minutes Halys, who dominated most of the longer baseline rallies, closed the opening set out.

Bester became more aggressive in the following searching his way to the net more often. The 26-year-old Canadian earned the break in the twelfth game of the second set to take the match the distance.

It was an even affair until the end of the match with a couple of spectacular rallies. Halys was very solid from baseline but Bester took more risk playing serve and volleys, which was finally rewarded. The North-American world number 483 gained the decisive break in the eighth game to eventually serve the match out after two hours and 12 minutes.

“Experience definitely helped today,” the Canadian told about his key to success. “I’ve had enough motivation to win because of the circumstances losing the last four finals in a row. It’s my first title after my hip surgery. So, I was ready to fight to the end,” Bester was more than happy to lift his first trophy on the ITF Future Circuit since winning at home in Canada in 2013.

“I had to make some adjustments in the second set. I didn’t want to play his game style, which is just playing from the baseline getting into a rhythm. My strengths are making my opponents uncomfortable in a way of being aggressive, coming to the net. I am little bit older now and as I said, I used my experience to make those adjustments finding a way to win,” Bester told about his match plan and added that he will go back to Canada now playing to US-$ 15.000 Future events and an ATP Challenger in Quebec.

“I am a proud Canadian. Davis Cup is probably one of my best memories and that’s also part of my motivation. Every day I work hard to get back to the Davis Cup team. Representing Canada and being part of the team again would be amazing,” said Bester, who was actually born in Germany.

“My parents were emigrating from Poland and I just decided that I wanted to come out in Germany. A year later we moved to Canada. Unfortunately, I don’t speak any German. I speak Polish but any time I go back to Germany, I visit my place of birth Sonthofen and I really like the country.”
