GUAYAQUIL/STARNBERG, November 20, 2025
Andres Andrade of Ecuador, Federico Gomez of Argentina, Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru, and Hady Habib of Lebanon became the first players to reach the quarterfinals of the Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil – Copa Banco Guayaquil. The ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament awards $100,000 in prize money and 75 ATP ranking points to the champion.
Andrade faced a tough challenge in his second-round match but battled through to defeat Spain’s David Jorda Sanchis 7–6(5), 3–6, 6–2 after two hours and 19 minutes of intense play.

“It was a very complicated match, full of highs and lows,” Andrade said. “I started well, got an early break, but then lost focus a bit and David took advantage. In the second set I ran out of energy and he served much better. Luckily, in the third I raised my level again and the match went my way.” With the victory, Andrade will climb from World No. 281 to No. 268 in the ATP Rankings.
His next opponent will be defending champion Federico Gomez, who is looking to regain the confidence and form that carried him to last year’s title. Gomez led Brazilian Paulo Saraiva Dos Santos 6–1, 4–1 before a dip in momentum allowed the Brazilian to force a tiebreak. Gomez ultimately sealed the win 6–1, 7–6(6).
“Seven wins here across two years is great, but they’re two different tournaments and two different seasons,” Gomez explained. “I’m focused on what I’m doing this week. Now I’ll rest, recover, and prepare for the next match. I don’t know yet who I’ll play, but I’m happy to keep going.”
Varillas and Habib Advance
Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, a former semifinalist in Guayaquil and once ranked No. 60 in the world, delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, defeating Bolivia’s Murkel Dellien 6–0, 7–5 to secure a quarterfinal berth.
He will face No. 3 seed Hady Habib, who earned a solid 6–3, 7–5 victory over Uruguay’s Joaquin Aguilar Cardozo.
