Mariano Navone has emerged as the new top favorite at the Uruguay Open after defeating Italian Marco Cecchinato 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The Argentine, ranked No. 74 in the world and a former world No. 29, once again overcame the player from Palermo – just as he did last week in the final of the Lima Challenger.
Following the early exit of world No. 45 Sebastian Baez, the top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 event, on Monday, Navone now stands as the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo.

Navone’s next opponent will be fellow Argentine Roman Andres Burruchaga, the No. 6 seed, who defeated countryman Facundo Mena 7-5, 6-4 after coming through the qualifying rounds.
There were other surprises in Wednesday’s action. Third-seeded US-American Emilio Nava was upset by Brazil’s Gustavo Heide, who prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Heide will next face Peruvian Ignacio Buse, the No. 7 seed, who outlasted Lithuania’s Vilius Gaubas 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(3).
