Due to bad weather over the last couple of day, it was an unusually busy Saturday at the Costa do Sauipe Open, as 15 matches were played from 11 a.m. onward to determine the singles and doubles semifinalists. The ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament, held on Brazil’s Bahia coast, offers $200,000 in prize money and 125 ATP Ranking points to the champion.

In the singles quarterfinals, Cristian Garin of Chile continued his resurgence by defeating top seed Mariano Navone of Argentina 7–6(4), 6–2. The former World No. 17 remains on track in his quest to return to the Top 100.

Garin will face Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the semifinals. The Paraguayan, a former junior World No. 1 and last week’s Curitiba Challenger champion, advanced with a 6–4, 6–2 victory over No. 4 seed Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina.

Another former Junior No. 1, Juan Prado Angelo of Bolivia, also reached the final four after taking out No. 3 seed Emilio Nava of the United States 7–6(2), 6–1. In the semifinals, he will face Roman Andres Burruchaga, who upset compatriot and No. 2 seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6–2, 6–3.

Prado Angelo, who has been showing strong form in recent weeks, expressed his joy after the win:

“I’m very happy. This is one of the toughest tournaments I’ve ever played, and reaching the semifinals makes me proud. I’ve been following Joao [Fonseca]’s amazing week — he’s been playing great in a very strong tournament, and I keep cheering for him,” said the Bolivian, a close friend of the Brazilian from their junior days.

The Costa do Sauipe Open is showcasing a new wave of South American talent: three of the four semifinalists are 23 years old or younger — Burruchaga (23), Vallejo (21), and Prado Angelo (20). The veteran of the group, Garin, is 29.
