VIENNA/STARNBERG, October 18, 2025
Vienna, October 18, 2025 –
The stage is set for another thrilling edition of the Erste Bank Open, with a strong field and a number of intriguing first-round match-ups. Saturday’s draw ceremony at the Stadthalle in Vienna combined humor and star power, with local favorite Jurij Rodionov reacting with a smile to his opening-round challenge.
The 25-year-old Austrian, currently ranked No. 155, received a wildcard into the main draw of the ATP 500 event and will face World No. 7 Alex de Minaur. “It will be an interesting match. De Minaur on a fast hard court is probably not ideal. But you have to take what Niavarani drew,” joked Rodionov, referring to the draw made by Austrian comedian Michael Niavarani.
Rodionov does, however, take some confidence into the match, having beaten De Minaur in their only previous meeting four years ago on grass in Stuttgart. “I’m really looking forward to it. The atmosphere in the Stadthalle is always fantastic — it’s like having a tailwind in a long-distance run. That tailwind just makes everything feel a little easier,” he added.
Another Austrian hopeful, Filip Misolic, also enters the tournament with a wildcard and a winnable first-round match against World No. 50 Camilo Ugo Carabelli. Their head-to-head is tied 1–1, both matches having been played on clay earlier this year. “It’s definitely a good draw, considering the names in the field. But it won’t be easy. We’ve already played twice this year, so let’s see who wins this time. I feel in good shape, I’ve trained here in Vienna already and I like the surface. Physically, I feel great, which is the most important thing,” Misolic said. If both Austrians advance, fans could be treated to a home clash in the round of 16.
Among the top seeds, World No. 2 Jannik Sinner headlines the draw and will open against Daniel Altmaier, a player he recently defeated in Shanghai. Second seed Alexander Zverev faces a qualifier in the first round and would meet another qualifier should he advance to the last 16.
One of the standout first-round encounters is the clash between Lorenzo Musetti and Stefanos Tsitsipas, a battle between two stylish shot-makers who have both reached the semifinals in Vienna in the past two editions.
