Seventh-seeded Canadian Gabriel Diallo made a commanding start to his campaign at the Almaty Open ATP 250 event defeating local wild card entry Amir Omarkhanov 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round on Monday.

Diallo, who captured his maiden ATP Tour title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch earlier this season, dominated the match with his serve and powerful baseline game to advance in just over an hour. The 22-year-old Canadian will next face James Duckworth, after the Australian overcame fellow qualifier Ugo Blanchet of France 6-3, 6-4 in a one-hour, 14-minute encounter.

In another first-round singles match, Fabian Marozsan of Hungary battled past Italy’s Luca Nardi 7-6(3), 6-3. The World No. 52 recovered after letting slip a 5-3 lead in the opening set before clinching the tiebreak and sealing the win in straight sets. The victory improved Marozsan’s head-to-head record against Nardi to 3-0
