ALMATY, October 12, 2025 (Press Release)
Top seed Karen Khachanov returns to Almaty this week looking to defend his title at the 2025 Almaty Open ATP 250 event, where he leads a strong field that includes compatriot Daniil Medvedev and several rising stars.
The World No. 14 arrives fresh off a solid summer swing and is eager to close his season with momentum at a tournament that holds special memories — having lifted the trophy here last year in front of a packed home-like crowd.
The Russian star spoke to media ahead of his title defense, sharing his thoughts on returning to Almaty, t and his motivation late in the season.
“I have great memories from last year,” Khachanov said. “The organizers and fans always make me feel at home. We don’t really have many home events on tour, but this one definitely feels that way.”
Following the US Open, Khachanov opted for a short break to rest and prepare for the final stretch of the year. “I didn’t play as many matches in Asia as I wanted, so I decided to train and then come here fresh. I’m motivated to push until the end of the season and Almaty is a great place to do that.”
The 28-year-old also praised Kazakhstan’s growing role on the ATP Tour.
“Tennis here is definitely growing,” he noted. “I remember when Astana even hosted an ATP 500 event. Now, moving to Almaty helps expand the sport around the country. Last year the stadium was full from the quarterfinals, and this year even the qualifying rounds are packed. That’s what really matters people getting excited about tennis.”
Reflecting on his season, Khachanov acknowledged the ups and downs but remains upbeat. “The start of the year was a bit rusty, but I built momentum during the clay season. Around the US Open, I felt close to my best again. It’s a long year you need to find the right balance between competing and recovering. Now I’m ready to finish strong “ he added
As the season winds down, Khachanov’s focus is on consistency and confidence. “If I can stay healthy, play solid tennis, and finish the year on a positive note, I’ll be happy. That’s what success looks like for me right now.”
