Jan Choinski captured the LAYJET Open title on Sunday at the Sportpark in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria, defeating No. 2 seed Vit Kopriva 7-5, 6-4 in the singles final of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event.

The 29-year-old Brit, ranked No. 227 in the ATP Rankings, faced the Czech World No. 102 — 125 places ahead of him — and produced a composed performance to secure one of the biggest wins of his career.

Choinski started strongly, racing to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before Kopriva battled back to 5-5. But the Brit earned a third break of serve and converted his fifth set point after exactly one hour to take the lead. In the second set, both players held serve to 4-4 before Choinski struck again with a decisive break and served out the match after one hour and 45 minutes.

“I’ve been playing really good tennis since the second round,” Choinski said. “After this success my clear goal for the coming weeks is to collect enough points to be able to play the qualifying at the ATP 500 in Vienna.”

Born in Koblenz to a Polish father and an English mother — both ballet dancers — Choinski holds British, Polish and German citizenships. He initially represented Germany but switched to Great Britain in 2018, citing better conditions and support.

His path to the title was anything but easy. In the quarterfinals he saved match points to edge German qualifier Marko Topo 8-6 in the deciding-set tiebreak. Last year, Choinski exited in the first round in Bad Waltersdorf. He now resides in Dubai and also trains under renowned coach Günter Bresnik at the Südstadt Academy in Austria.

By winning his sixth ATP Challenger Tour career title, his third of the season after Troyes, France and the Dutch Open Tournament in Bunschoten, Choinski earned €25,740 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.

Following the final, Austrian Tennis Association vice president Jürgen Roth praised the tournament: “We are extremely happy that this Challenger has become so established. Our thanks go not only to organiser Sascha Freitag but to all the volunteers, sponsors and partners who make an event like this possible. Tennis enthusiasm in Austria had fallen asleep a little, but with Davis Cup successes and tournaments like this, it is definitely being reawakened.”
