SEVILLA, September 1, 2025

The magic of tennis has returned to Sevilla, Spain, where the clay courts of the Real Club de Tenis Betis are once again hosting the historic Copa Sevilla. Main draw action of the ATP Challenger Tour event with more than six decades of tradition kicked off on Monday. The tournament offers 125 ATP Ranking points to the champion and a total prize purse of €181,250, promising a week of high-level competition and drama.

This year’s field is among the strongest in recent memory. World No. 87 and three-time defending champion Roberto Carballes Baena leads the draw, but was forced to retire in the third set of his opening match against Argentina’s Genaro Olivieri due to injury.

Carlos Taberner, the second seed in Andalucia, aims to continue his fine form on clay and join a winners’ list that has featured future stars. Rising Portuguese talent Jaime Faria, seeded third, began his campaign against Spain’s Nicolas Alvarez Varona in a fiery Iberian duel, rallying 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Former World No. 23 Duaan Lajovic of Serbia, seeded fourth, also had to go the distance, winning 7-6(4), 6-7(2), 6-1 against Elias Ymer of Sweden.

Yet perhaps the biggest name of all is Pablo Carreno Busta. The Olympic bronze medalist and former Top 10 player has returned to action after a strong showing in the United States. His opening-round match against fellow Spaniard and freshly crowned Mallorca champion Daniel Rincon is set to be one of the highlights of the early stages.
