Benjamin Winter and Pedro Vives claimed the doubles crown at the XV Copa Real Club de Tenis de Oviedo, defeating Ivqn Marrero and Rafael Izquierdo 6-4, 6-3 in an all-Spanish final they controlled from start to finish.

Vives will have the chance to complete a memorable double on Sunday after also advancing to the singles final of the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event in Asturias. The 22-year-old Spaniard overcame top seed Lorenzo Giustino from Italy 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals, setting up a title clash with his compatriot Miguel Damas, who progressed when Javier Barranco Cosano was forced to retire due to injury. Damas was leading 7-5, 4-2 when the No. 2 seed was forced to stop playing.

The singles semifinals were heavily influenced by strong winds, which made conditions difficult for both players. “It was a pretty good match considering the circumstances,” Vives said afterwards. “If it wasn’t windier than yesterday, it was the same, but maybe today it was easier to play because the wind was always in the same direction, so you could adjust your game plan better.”

Vives admitted he made a shaky start against Giustino: “He started well and I was a bit erratic in my second service game, but then I managed to recover, and he struggled to keep up with the pace I set.” Reflecting on the tight second set, he added: “I had a bad service game at the start, but broke back quickly. From there, we both served very well until 6-5, when every point was a battle, and in the end, it fell my way.”

Looking ahead to his final against Damas, Vives said: “In this tennis world, we all know each other from the circuit, but we’ve never played against each other. It will be a very tough match.”

Damas, meanwhile, expressed sympathy for Barranco after his opponent was forced to stop. “It’s a pity he got injured, I hope it’s nothing serious,” said the 23-year-old. “He was playing a very good match until 6-5, when it looked like he started having problems. It’s never easy playing against an injured rival—I got a bit tense too, and tried to manage it the best I could. I just wish him a speedy recovery.”

On facing Vives in the championship match, Damas was upbeat: “I’ve never played against him. He’s come back from the U.S. with big ambitions, but I’m playing well and confident in my chances. Tomorrow I’ll give it everything, and I’m sure the best will come out.”

The singles final between Pedro Vives and Miguel Damas is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 noon.
