Chengdu Open Returns For Seventh Edition

Chengdu Open 2025

CHENGDU, August 20, 2025 (Press Release)

The Chengdu Open made its debut on the ATP Tour in 2016 and was an instant success. Since then, this 250-level tournament has continued to grow each year, and once again promises to be a standout on the ATP Tour’s Asian Swing.

Now entering its seventh edition, the 2025 Chengdu Open returns to the Sichuan International Tennis Centre from 17 to 23 September, with qualifying rounds taking place on 16 and 17 September. The tournament offers a total prize money of $US1,190,210, with the singles winner receiving $US181,065 and the victorious doubles team sharing a cheque for $62,970.

The 2025 event is excited to welcome in a new Tournament Director, with Nikhil Waugh, Senior Director Tennis Events, IMG, taking over from Luiz Carvalho.

“I have watched the Chengdu Open from afar and have always been impressed by its organisation and the regard it holds among the players. It is a privilege to take over from Luiz and I look forward to working with the team that has built such a strong reputation over the years,” Nikhil Waugh said.

“Each year the Chengdu Open has delivered terrific matches, with finals that have consistently been close and memorable. Almost every final has gone to three sets, with at least one tiebreaker along the way.

“Even last year’s straight-sets final had a thrilling opening set that kept fans on the edge of their seats. However, what made it truly special was the history it made. Juncheng Shang, while still a teenager, became the first Chinese man to win an ATP singles title on home soil.

“Speaking of Jerry, as he’s affectionately known on Tour, we are delighted to provide him a wild card to defend his title this year. Joining him is the very man he defeated in that memorable final, Lorenzo Musetti, who rocketed into the world’s Top 10 for the first time this year. We are also thrilled to welcome British sensation Jack Draper, who will make his Chengdu Open debut as the top seed.”

The singles draw will feature 28 players, with the top four seeds receiving first-round byes. The line-up includes 19 direct entries, three wild cards, four qualifiers, one Special Exempt, and one Next Gen spot. Players from 13 countries are represented in the main draw, led by France, Great Britain and Italy with three participants each, followed by the United States with two. The line-up also includes top talents from China, Australia, Spain, Serbia, Argentina, and more, underscoring the tournament’s truly international field.

Draper arrives in Chengdu following some outstanding seasons on the tour. The British world No.5 captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells in March and also reached the final of the Madrid Masters in early May. With three Tour titles to his name—including Stuttgart and Vienna—the 23-year-old’s booming serve, aggressive baseline game, and left-handed angles make him one of the most exciting and dangerous young talents on the ATP Tour. This will also be Draper’s first tournament appearance in China, adding further significance to his Chengdu debut.

Second seed Musetti is returning to Chengdu for the third consecutive year and, after having made the last four in 2023 and final last year, will be hoping it’s third time lucky as he bids for his first Chengdu crown.

Celebrated for his all-court game and rare, elegant single handed backhand, the 23-year-old etched his name into history books in 2024 with a bronze medal triumph at the Paris Olympic Games, becoming the first Italian man in a century to win an Olympic tennis medal. This year, he was also a finalist at Monte Carlo, made semifinal runs in Madrid and Rome, and reached a new career high ranking of No.6 in June.

Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, fresh from winning his third career title in Mallorca this June, enters as the third seed, while rising American star Brandon Nakashima, winner of the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals, rounds out the top four ranked players.

Local fans will be especially excited for Shang’s return, whose breakthrough 2024 season was highlighted by his maiden title in Chengdu. Following the win, he broke into the world’s Top 50 for the first time, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 47 and becoming the first man born in 2005 or later to achieve that milestone.

Shang carried the momentum into 2025, opening the year with a semifinal run in Hong Kong, but niggling pain in his right foot forced him to retire in the first round of the Australian Open and undergo surgery in March. Having played only four Tour-level events this year, the 20-year-old will be seizing the opportunity to regain his form and on-court confidence in front of the very fans that spurred his historic triumph last year.

Adding to the excitement, the field also features established ATP players and rising stars, including former world No. 6 Gael Monfils, Sebastian Baez, Cameron Norrie, Lorenzo Sonego and many more.

Ticket sales for the 2025 Chengdu Open will begin on August 21, with prices ranging from RMB 30 for qualifying rounds to RMB 600 for the finals. Tickets will be available via the Damai App as well as the WeChat and Alipay Mini Programs. An early bird promotion, running from August 21 to 31, will offer discounts of 5% to 20% for customers purchasing two or more tickets.

In addition, the tournament has partnered with the Rolex Shanghai Masters to launch four special travel packages on Ctrip, China’s leading online travel platform, starting August 25. These limited-edition packages combine tickets to popular matches with curated recommendations for Chengdu’s attractions and premium hotels. Fans who successfully book will also receive an exclusive piece of tournament merchandise.

Beyond the tennis action, the tournament is organising the ACE Carnival, an exciting community initiative that will ignite a festival atmosphere at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre from September 16 to 23. Under the theme “Make a Friend, Gather for a Rally”, the carnival will feature a Grand Slam Market Zone with over 30 vendors offering local specialties, craft beer, and cultural showcases, as well as daily evening performances by local Chengdu bands.

Interactive activities will also be on offer at the Rally Fun Zone, where visitors can try their hand at pickleball, frisbee, and combat archery. Meanwhile, the Brand Showcase Zone will host sponsor booths and the official tournament merchandise store, providing plenty of opportunities for fans to immerse themselves in the event’s vibrant culture both on and off the court.
