BONN/STARNBERG, August 7, 2025
Austria’s Joel Schwaerzler headlined Thursday’s second-round action at the Bonn Open by defeating No. 6 seed Federico Coria of Argentina in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 75 clay-court event. The 19-year-old, a former Junior World No. 1, rallied past Coria 7-6(4), 6-1 in 94 minutes on a packed Centre Court, which also hosted prominent guests including footballers from the 1. FC Köln.
Coria, a former World No. 49, started strong and raced to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. But Schwaerzler mounted an impressive comeback, leveling the match and eventually taking the tiebreak 7-4. Riding the momentum, the Austrian broke early in the second set, held off two break points, and never looked back. His dominant performance ended Coria’s run in the round of 16.
Collignon and Reis da Silva into Last Eight
Belgium’s Raphael Collignon, the only Top 100 player left in the draw, remains a strong title contender. The No. 2 seed powered past Switzerland’s Jerome Kym 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 4 seed Vilius Gaubas of Lithuania was made to work hard by Czech qualifier Martin Krumich. After dropping the first set, Gaubas raised his level to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in just over two hours. Joao Lucas Reis da Silva of Brazil also booked a spot in the quarters with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win over French veteran Geoffrey Blancaneaux.
