The 38th edition of the BDO Tenis Playa Luanco got underway on Monday with victories for Argentina’s Pedro Cachin and Spain’s Miguel Avendaño. The matches, played on the iconic sand court of La Ribera in Asturias, Spain drew a full house with 2,300 spectators in attendance.

The tournament opener saw Cachin take on Spain’s Bernardo Munk in a tightly contested first set. The Argentine broke Munk’s serve in the seventh game and held his own to close out the set 6-3 in 37 minutes. Playing in his second Luanco appearance, and runner-up last year, Cachin relied on his experience to maintain control.

Cachin raised his level at the start of the second set, putting pressure on the young Madrid native. Munk, however, showed flashes of brilliance with some spectacular shots but ultimately fell again 6-3 in just 25 minutes.

Frenchman Benoit Paire, a last-minute replacement for Federico Coria, made his debut on the sand of La Ribera against young Spaniard Miguel Avendaño. Their first set offered a thrilling spectacle with numerous service breaks and momentum shifts. Avendaño came out on top 7-5 after 50 minutes, supported by an enthusiastic crowd.

The second set, completed in 29 minutes, was more straightforward, with both players holding serve consistently, particularly Paire, who struck several impressive aces. However, at 5-4 down and 40-0 up, the Frenchman faltered. A net error and some tricky bounces on the sandy surface tipped the set, and the match, in Avendaño’s favor.

Day 2 action: Zapata and Butvilas join the fray

Tuesday’s schedule will see new contenders enter the tournament. Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles, former World No. 37 and winner of four ATP Challenger titles, will face Pedro Cachin in what promises to be a compelling match. Zapata is currently ranked around 380.

Meanwhile, defending Luanco champion Edas Butvilas of Lithuania, who has won two ATP Challenger titles and reached a career-high ranking of World 201 on March 17, 2025, will take on Miguel Avendaño in the second round.

Semifinals and final tickets sold out

The tournament’s popularity remains strong. Tickets for both the semifinals and final sold out on the first day of availability.
