POZOBLANCO/STARNBERG, July 16, 2025
Third seed Alejandro Moro Canas made a strong statement at the Open Ciudad de Pozoblanco, easing past France’s Dan Added 6-1, 7-5 to book his spot in the second round. The ATP Challenger 75 hard-court event, held in the Córdoba province, runs through July 20.
Moro Canas, one of the tournament’s top contenders, delivered a dominant first set in just over 30 minutes, putting Added – twice a doubles champion in Pozoblanco – under constant pressure. Though the Frenchman raised his level in the second set and created several break point opportunities, Moro held firm and sealed the match in the 12th game, avoiding a tiebreak.
With second seed Mikhail Kukushkin suffering a surprise 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Britain’s Ryan Peniston, Moro Canas now emerges as the clear favorite in the bottom half of the draw.
Spain’s Alex Martinez, coming from qualifying, was unable to join Moro in the next round after falling to US-American teenager Darwin Blanch 7-6(4), 6-2. Martinez missed two break opportunities in a close first set, which Blanch snatched in the tiebreak. From there, the Catalan’s level dipped, allowing Blanch to cruise through the second set after an early break.
Elsewhere, defending champion and top seed Hugo Grenier made an emphatic return to Pozoblanco, dispatching Jordanian talent Abdullah Shelbayh 6-1, 6-2. The Frenchman took control early and never looked back, breaking twice in the first set and again in the second as Shelbayh struggled with consistency.
Fourth seed Johannus Monday had a more testing path to the next round. The Brit edged Italian qualifier Fabrizio Andaloro 6-4, 7-6(5) in a tightly contested match. Monday broke late in the first set and survived a scare in the second, surrendering a 5-4 lead before closing the match in the tiebreak.
Australian Edward Winter also impressed with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over Brazil’s Mateus Alves, advancing smoothly into the second round.
