“I don’t know what it is. I just come here and play good tennis, so it was a great week for me,” said Fritz. The World No. 5 from the United States battled past Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, compatriot Marcos Giron, and sixth-seeded Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to earn his fourth Eastbourne title after lifting trophies in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
“I think it’s always going to be a special place for me because I won my first Tour title here. I usually hate the wind so much, but I’m not sure why. I felt like I came out with a little bit of nerves, but I was able to get the break back, and at the end of the first set I really upped my level and began to play really good tennis. It is what it is having to play at Wimbledon on Monday – I’d rather go into a tournament with a lot of confidence, than being there for the whole week just practising. Winning is fresh on my mind, and I think we’re ready. One more title and I might have to buy a house here.”
Brooksby, who fell in the final round of qualifying to Alexander Vukic, said: “I thought I was heading home after losing in qualifying here, but I made the finals, which is what I dream about, I work hard for. It didn’t go my way today but I’m proud of the effort I put in on and off the court all week. It was a really strong level from Taylor today – too good. After the first few games I was unable to get into the return games. I didn’t serve bad today, but I knew I had to serve at a high, consistent level – however you can’t give opportunities to a player as good as him.”
