STUTTGART, June 12, 2025
Top seed and home favourite Alexander Zverev kicked off his BOSS Open campaign in Stuttgart with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6(7) win over Corentin Moutet. In a tricky second-round encounter lasting one hour and 51 minutes, Zverev had to contend with the Frenchman’s unpredictable shot selection and frequent changes of pace.
Although the German didn’t always find his top form, he delivered when it mattered most—especially in the tense second-set tie-break. Zverev saved a set point at 5/6 before closing out the match in straight sets to move safely into the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event.
“The first match on grass is never easy,” said Zverev in his on-court interview. “I actually think it was a very average match, but I won in the end and that’s the most important thing. I made it complicated, but a win is a win and I’m happy to play tomorrow again.”
Next up for Zverev will be US-American Brandon Nakashima. The No. 6 seed overcame his countryman Learner Tien 7-6(5), 6-3.
Engel continues run on grass
Earlier on Thursday, German teenager Justin Engel continued his remarkable breakthrough run with a 6-4, 6-4 upset over World No. 35 Alex Michelsen. The 17-year-old, who had never played a professional match on grass before his first-round win against James Duckworth, broke serve in the third game of each set to notch his first career win over a Top 50 player.
Born in Nuremberg, Engel is now the youngest quarter-finalist in Stuttgart tournament history and the youngest to reach a tour-level quarter-final on grass since Boris Becker’s Wimbledon title run in 1985. Thanks to his performance this week, Engel has jumped 49 spots to No. 232 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and climbed four places to No. 9 in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah.
The teenager will next play is Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada. The fourth seed and two-time Stuttgart finalist knocked off Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4.
