VIENNA/STARNBERG, June 3, 2025
As the Grand Slam tournament in Paris reaches its decisive stages, the field for this year’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna – to be held from 18 to 26 October – is beginning to take shape. Following the confirmation of World No. 3 and 2021 Vienna champion Alexander Zverev, another top star is set to light up Austria’s tennis highlight: Lorenzo Musetti.
Musetti has been riding a wave of outstanding results this spring, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 7. After reaching the final in Monte Carlo and back-to-back semi-finals in Madrid and Rome, the 23-year-old has continued his strong form at the French Open, advancing to the quarterfinals in Paris. With these impressive performances, Musetti is now closing in on the Top 5 in the ATP Race to Turin.
Joining him in Vienna will be rising star Flavio Cobolli. The 23-year-old Italian has made a major breakthrough this season, claiming his first two ATP titles in Bucharest and Hamburg. Those victories have propelled him to a career-best ranking of No. 26. While he grew up playing on clay, Cobolli has become an increasingly dangerous opponent on hard courts as well. Notably, he is one of just three players—alongside Carlos Alcaraz (Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, Rome) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Adelaide, Montpellier)—to have won multiple ATP titles so far in 2025. Tennis experts agree: Flavio Cobolli is a name to watch.
Rounding out the Italian trio is fan favourite Matteo Berrettini. Austrian fans will remember his thrilling 2019 semi-final clash with Dominic Thiem, which the local hero narrowly won in three sets en route to his home victory. A Wimbledon finalist in 2021, Berrettini is the perfect blend of athleticism and elegance—qualities that make him a crowd-puller wherever he plays.
“We are delighted to welcome three more outstanding players to this year’s Erste Bank Open alongside Alexander Zverev,” said Tournament Director Herwig Straka. “Each of them brings their own charisma and unique playing style, which will certainly captivate the Vienna tennis crowd. There is also justified hope that the current top-ranked Italian will join the field in October.”
