OEIRAS/STARNBERG, May 17, 2025
Cristian Garin captured his second title in as many weeks by winning the Oeiras Open 5, the final ATP Challenger event of the year organized by the Portuguese Tennis Federation at the Jamor Tennis Complex. This made Oeiras the first municipality in the world to host five Challenger tournaments in a single season, all in 2025.
Seven years after finishing runner-up at the Lisboa Belem Open and a year after reaching the semifinals of the Millennium Estoril Open, the 28-year-old Chilean, currently ranked No. 153, finally triumphed on Portuguese soil. He added the Jamor title to the one he claimed in Mauthausen, Austria, just two weeks earlier.
Garin battled for two hours and 39 minutes to overcome US-American Mitchell Krueger in a hard-fought final, winning 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2. It marked his 10th consecutive win, following a grueling semifinal victory that lasted over three hours.
Krueger, playing in just his second career Challenger final on clay and first outside the green clay of the U.S., delivered a strong performance throughout the week. However, Garin’s superior clay-court credentials ultimately made the difference, especially in the deciding set where he won the final three games in a row. This was Garín’s sixth ATP Challenger title in his ninth final, and his first since 2018.
A former World No. 17, Garin boasts five ATP titles, including one at the 500 level, and has reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and three ATP Masters 1000 events. With this latest success, he is projected to climb back to No. 122, putting him within striking distance of the top 100 as he heads to Roland-Garros for the qualifying rounds.

“I’m very happy. It was a tough week against tough opponents. I made the decision to come here at the last minute, and it was the right one. I played well all week. Yesterday I played three hours, and today almost three again. I’m exhausted, but it was worth the effort,” Garin said, smiling after his victory.
He added: “Now I just want to rest, eat, travel, and sleep. Roland-Garros is important, but this title here in Portugal is the moment I’m living right now, and I’m really happy.”
Doubles Title for Mies and Vega Hernandez
In doubles, Andreas Mies and David Vega Hernandez celebrated their first title together after earlier tests in Estoril and Prague. They defeated Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil and David Pichler from Austria, 6-4, 6-4.
Mies, 34 and a former doubles World No. 8, earned his 36th career doubles title, which includes back-to-back Roland-Garros trophies with Kevin Krawietz in 2019 and 2020. The Oeiras Open 5 marked his 21st Challenger doubles title, his first in over six years.
Vega Hernandez, currently ranked No. 134, previously reached world No. 28 in early 2023. This was his 44th doubles title overall and his 15th Challenger doubles title, the second this year after one alongside Anirudh Chandrasekar.
Record Year for Oeiras and Portuguese Tennis
Portugal made history by hosting five ATP Challenger tournaments in one municipality in a single season — three on indoor hard courts and two on clay. Oeiras became the first location globally to achieve this milestone in 2025.
The next Challenger event in Portugal will take place in Porto (Challenger 100), from July 27 to August 3, on the hard courts of the Monte Aventino Sports Complex.
