TURIN/STARNBERG, May 16, 2025

The Piemonte Open Intesa Sanpaolo saw the last two Italians exit the singles draw, but the spotlight of the day belonged to Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli — both on and off the court. The World No. 60 battled past Taiwan’s Chun-Hsin Tseng in a dramatic quarterfinal, winning 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 in over three hours to book his spot in the semifinals of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 tournament in Turin.

After his grueling win, Ugo Carabelli made a short celebratory trip to the Torino FC store, located just a few steps from the tournament venue, where he bought a jersey of the local football club. Though a devoted fan of Argentina’s San Lorenzo — the same team supported by former Pope Francis — Ugo Carabelli has a soft spot for Torino FC and chose this as his special souvenir to mark a strong week in the city.

His hard-fought win came down to a critical moment at 5-5 in the second set, when he saved a break point — with a bit of luck — that completely shifted the momentum in his favor. Ugo Carabelli now faces 23-year-old Chinese Yunchaokete Bu in the semifinals, who advanced after Francesco Passaro retired unexpectedly at 5-5 in the first set due to a recurring glute injury.

Italy’s hopes in the singles draw were further dashed as Flavio Cobolli, the top Italian seed, fell to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-5. Cobolli never quite found his rhythm and, despite a brief comeback in the second set where he won four straight games from 1-4 down, was unable to maintain momentum and bowed out shortly after.
