Portugal is set to host the fifth ATP Challenger tournament of the season at the iconic Jamor Tennis Complex, as the Oeiras Open 5 takes place from May 11 to 18. This marks a global record for the number of ATP Challenger Tour events held at a single venue this season, organized by the Portuguese Tennis Federation.

Elevated to an ATP Challenger 100 category, the tournament lands in a crucial spot on the tennis calendar: just before Roland-Garros qualifying begins and during the final week for players to collect ranking points toward entry into the Wimbledon main draw. As a result, the player field is packed with top-tier talent aiming to secure vital points.

Portugal will be well-represented with five national players in the main draw: Jaime Faria, Henrique Rocha, Gastao Elias, Tiago Pereira, and Pedro Araujo. Faria, who claimed his maiden Challenger title at this very event a year ago, returns as the country’s No. 2 and former top-100 player, currently ranked 108th in the world.

Henrique Rocha (ATP 195) joins the main draw directly, while Elias (318), Pereira (409), and Araujo (443) have received wild cards. At 34, Gastao Elias continues to make history in Portuguese tennis. The veteran leads the country in ATP Challenger titles (10) and finals (23), with three of those titles coming at the Jamor venue.

The top seed for the tournament is Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro (ATP 106), a former World No. 61 and winner of the 2021 Braga Open. He’s joined by fellow Brazilians Thiago Seyboth Wild (120), Felipe Meligeni Alves (123), and Gustavo Heide (182), adding further depth to the Lusophone presence in the draw.

Big international names are also set to compete, including Chile’s Cristian Garin, US-American Christopher Eubanks, and China’s Yibing Wu. Garin, once ranked No. 17 in the world, has five ATP titles and has reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome—mainly excelling on clay. Eubanks (ATP 110, ex-29) had a standout 2023, winning the ATP 250 in Mallorca and reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Wu, a trailblazer for Chinese tennis, was the first Chinese man to win an ATP title (Dallas 2023) and to defeat a top-10 opponent, though injuries have hindered his progress.

Other high-profile entrants include Denmark’s Elmer Møller (111), winner of both the Braga Open and the recent Oeiras Open 125; US-American Tristan Boyer (122); and Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante (133). Spain’s Carlos Taberner (139), a finalist in Maia and Porto, and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran from the United States (149), the 2022 Braga Open champion, also return to Portuguese soil seeking more success.
