The Steel City proved a fruitful hunting ground for British tennis players this week, as home favourites claimed three out of four possible titles at the Lexus British Pro Series Sheffield.

British players featured in all four finals, two of them being all-British affairs, underlining a week of dominant performances. In the men’s singles final, Cambridge’s Harry Wendelken took on Yorkshire’s own Paul Jubb in the men’s final, with both hoping to take home their first singles title of the year. After a tight first set, it was Jubb who took the lead, with a tiebreak needed to separate the two. However, Wendelken rallied in the second set, securing the crucial break in the sixth game leading to him securing the second set, before asserting his dominance in the third, breaking Jubb’s serve twice to take the decider and win the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2.

After his win, Wendelken said, “[at the end of the first set] I thought he was being more aggressive and was playing better; I was being a bit defensive and I knew the only way I could win this match was if I started playing more aggressively and take it to him, and I managed to do that for the last two sets.”

In the women’s singles, Slovakian Katarina Kuzmova denied home fans a clean sweep of British titles, as she defeated Nottinghamshire’s Amelia Rajecki. Rajecki flew out of the blocks, winning the first set in just 19 minutes. However, a much tighter second set went the way of Kuzmova after she secured a break late in the set, before the Slovakian broke again midway through the third and never relinquished her advantage, claiming a 1-6 7-5 6-3 win.

In the doubles, Kuzmova partnered Sussex’s Alicia Dudeney to the final, but was unable to claim both women’s titles, as Rajecki did take home some silverware alongside London’s Lauryn John-Baptiste. After splitting the first two sets, the title came down to a match tiebreak, and after both pairs traded mini-breaks throughout the decider, it was Rajecki and John-Baptiste who secured the deciding break, before serving out the match to secure a 4-6 6-3 10-8 win.

After the win, Rajecki spoke of the energy needed to keep going in the tiebreak, saying “I let out a little whoop (at 4-3) as we needed a little motivation as it was tight”, before adding on the partnership with Lauryn, “last time we played together, I really enjoyed it and the vibes were good, and in doubles you’ve got to have some fun.”

In the men’s doubles, Emile Hudd and Anton Matusevich showed matches are won on court and not on draw sheets, as they took down the number one and two-seeded pairs on their way to the title. After defeating the number one seeds Tom Hands and Harry Wendelken in the first round, the pair faced number two seeds Lui Maxted and Finn Murgett in the final, and after a solitary break of serve went Matusevich and Hudd’s way in the first set, they then recovered from a break down to win six of the final seven games in set two, claiming a 7-6(4) 6-3 win.

Following the conclusion of the finals, Tournament Director Sarah Wooding said, “The Lexus British Pro Series Sheffield was a busy week, combining ITF M25 and W35 events. There were many notable performances from British players during the week, with Brits taking home 3 of the 4 titles on offer. Congratulations to Lauryn John-Baptiste and Amelia Rajecki, and Emile Hudd and Anton Matusevich on their respective doubles titles, and top seed Harry Wendelken who defeated Paul Jubb in a thrilling Men’s Singles final to complete the event.”

International tournaments such as the Lexus British Pro Series Sheffield are part of the LTA’s Performance Competitions Calendar (PCC) which provides significantly enhanced opportunities for British players at each age and stage of the performance player pathway on home soil. The calendar is designed to provide comprehensive opportunities for British players to play, earn ranking points and win prize money at home, throughout the year.

This week marks the turn of the wheelchair stars to take to the court, as a fortnight of action gets underway in the first of two back-to-back ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour events in Bolton.
