Dane Sweeny has captured his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the Brisbane International 1. The No. 5 seed of the hard-court event outlasted fellow Australian and second seed Tristan Schoolkate 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in Sunday’s singles final.
Sweeny advanced to the championship match with victories over Japanese qualifier Shunsuke Mitsui, local wild card entries Tai Sach and Cruz Hewitt as well as No. 8 seed Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan.
The 24-year-old Penrith native withstood 23 aces in the final, won nine points less than Schoolkate but was styed sharp in the decisive moments to secure victory in two hours and 41 minutes.

Following 15 triumphs on the ITF World Tennis Tour, eight of them last year, Sweeny lifted his maiden Challenger trophy at the Queensland Tennis Centre. The world No. 151 earned $17,000 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.
With a total prize pool of $107,000, the Brisbane International 1 kicked off the Challenger swing in Queensland. The tour now stays on for another week for a second Challenger 75 event, with Tristan Schoolkate and Dane Sweeny set to lead the field as the top two seeds.
