Luca van Assche was crowned champion of the 17th edition of the Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale held at the Kostum Park – À Nous La Vie in Quimper, Brittany for the first time. The 21-year-old Frenchman rallied from a set down to overcome Swiss alternate Remy Bertola 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in Sunday’s singles final.

Van Assche struck nine aces, won 80 per cent of his first-service points and broke his rival’s serve three times to prevail after two hours and three minutes.

The world No. 165, who knocked out defending champion Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg of France in a marathon match, which lasted almost three hours in Saturday’s semi-finals, claimed his fifth ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first of the season. It also marks the 10th time in the history of the tournament that a Frenchman has lifted the trophy, earning him €30,460 in prize money and 125 ATP ranking points.

During the trophy ceremony, van Assche thanked his new coach, Sébastien Villette, with whom he has played only his third tournament so far. He mentioned that his father traveled especially from Paris to attend the final. Van Assche had lost in the third round of qualifying for the Australian Open, but the Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale proved to be an excellent place to get back on the winning track after his defeat in Melbourne. The former junior world No. 1 also thanked the crowd, who carried him through the final with their support.
