Noguchi Notches Second Bangkok Open Title

Rio Noguchi of Japan captured the title of the Bangkok Open 1. The No. 3 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour hard-court event in Nonthaburi, Thailand, defeated Mark Gengel from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 in Saturday’s singles final.

Noguchi advanced to the championship match with straight-set wins in the bottom half of the draw over Sanhui Shin of South Korea, Tung-Lin Wu from Chinese Taipei, Russian Marat Sharipov and sixth-seeded Austrian Joel Schwaerzler.

In the pair’s third meeting, the world No. 227 from Fukuoka withstood five aces and broke Gengel’s serve four times to secure his second victory over the Czech in one hour and 11 minutes.

Noguchi, who earned his maiden Challenger title here in Nonthaburi exactly one year ago, lifted his second career trophy. He pocketed $9,500 in prize money as well as 50 ATP Ranking points.

The Bangkok Open 1 was hosted by the The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand and offered a total prize pool of $63,000.
