PERUGIA/STARNBERG, June 15, 2023

Dominic Thiem lost his opening match at the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Perugia | G.I.Ma. Tennis Cup. The No. 4 seed from Austria, who received a wild card into the main draw of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event in Umbria, lost to Italian lucky loser Stefano Travaglia 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Travaglia broke Thiem’s serve three times and won 51 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in two hours and 36 minutes.

“I’m glad I took advantage of this opportunity,” said Travaglia, who lost in the final round of qualifying to Andrea Arnaldi and replaced the injured Flavio Cobolli. “I have been coming to play in Perugia for many years. I like the conditions and in the match against Dominic I took advantage of the slow conditions. In every match I try to impose my game without looking at who I play against. I had a slow start into the match, then I improved and came back.”

After falling in the second round of the NECKARCUP in Heilbronn, Germany last week, Thiem suffered another early loss at an ATP Challenger tournament. Travaglia will next play his compatriot Francesco Maestrelli.
