Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Argentine alternate Genaro Alberto Olivieri will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Uruguay Open. Etcheverry, No. 2 seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event hosted by the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, snapped a 13 match winning streak of Daniel Altmaier from Germany in the stage of the last four on Saturday.
The World No. 85 from Argentina withstood seven aces and broke his rival’s serve four times to secure a 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(6) victory in three hours and 25 minutes.
Later in the day, Olivieri also came back from a set down to outlast No. 8 seed Franco Agamenone of Italy 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 253 from Bragado won six points less than his opponent but prevailed after two hours and 38 minutes.
Etcheverry is bidding for his fourth Challenger career crown, his second of the season following his triumph in Concepcion in Chile in March. Olivieri, a two-time winner on the ITF World Tennis Tour, could lift his maiden Challenger trophy. Etcheverry leads the pair’s head-to-head record 3-1.
Drzewiecki/Matuszewski triumph in doubles
In other action, Karol Drzewiecki and Piotr Matuszewski won the doubles title. The fourth-seeded Poles beat third favourites Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina and Luis David Martinez from Venezuela 6-4, 6-4 in 66 minutes.
By earning their first team title Drzewiecki and Matuszewski split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
