Briton Jan Choinski continued his fine run of form this week in Campinas, Brazil by reaching the singles final of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis, being the first qualifier in the tournament’s history to do so.
The World No. 457 defeated Swiss lucky loser Remy Bertola 6-4, 6-4 in the stage of the last four on Saturday. Choinski won 81 per cent of his first-service points and broke his rival four times to seal victory in one hour and 24 minutes.

“It was a fantastic match,” said Choinski. “It’s my first time here in Campinas. I played in front of a lot people, which makes it even more special, because I always like to play in front of the crowd. That’s what I work for everyday. And having the support from the crowd certainly values the victory even more.”
In his second final on the ATP Challenger Tour after finishing runner-up to Filip Horansky in Meerbusch, Germany four years ago, Choinski will take on 2019 champion Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru for the title.
The No. 2 seed of the $53,120 clay-court event defeated Luciano Darderi of Italy 6-3, 6-4. Varillas capitalized on all of his four break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 33 minutes.
“I’m very happy to reach the final once again,” said Varillas. “It was a very difficult match, as it has been all week. I have great memories of Campinas, which was my first Challenger title in my career. At the time, I didn’t even expect such a good result.”
World No. 107 Varillas is seeking his fifth ATP Challenger career crown, his first of the season. Choinski, who was born in Germany, could lift his maiden trophy.
Arias/Zeballos triumph in doubles
In other action, Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos earned the doubles title. The Bolivians fought past the all-Argentine combination of Guido Andreozzi and Guillermo Duran 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 10 minutes.
By winning their second Challenger team title after Blumenau in Brazil earlier this season, Arias and Zeballos split $3,100 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
