After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Championnats Banque Nationale de Granby is back celebrating its 25th edition this week. The qualifying of the $53,120 hard-court event wrapped up Monday when top seed Alafia Ayeni booked his spot in the main draw.

The World No. 537 from United States fought past Frenchman Jonathan Eysseric 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes. Ayeni, 23, will face Aziz Dougaz of Tunisia in the first round of Canada’s longest-running Challenger tournament.

He will be joined in the main draw by his compatriots Colin Markes and Aidan Mayo as well as Canadians Justin Boulais and Dan Martin. Australia’s Luke Saville rounds out the qualifiers at the Tennis St-Luc – Les Loisirs De Granby.

The field is led by World No. 58 Arthur Rinderknech. The 27-year-old Frenchman, who finished runner-up to his fellow countryman Constant Lestienne at last week’s Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver, will open his title bid against US-American Omni Kumar. Second seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic plays Mayo in his first match.
