Emilio Gomez did not drop a set all week at the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger presented by MBuilds to claim his fourth ATP Challenger Tour career title and second of the season following his triumph on home soil in Salinas in April.

In Sunday’s championship match of the $53,120 hard-court event in Canada, the 30-year-old from Ecuador saved 11 of 12 break points faced and capitalized on three of his own seven break-point chances en route to a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over home favourite Alexis Galarneau. The encounter lasted two hours and one minute.

Gomez, son of 1990 Roland Garros champion Andres Gomez, is the first player from Ecuador to win multiple titles in a year since Giovanni Lapentti in 2008. He earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points, which draws him closer to the Top 100 for the first time. Gomez has reached a new career-high of World No. 121.
