Stricker Secures Zug Open Challenger Title

Local hero Dominic Stricker clinched the title of the inaugural Finaport Zug Open. The 19-year-old Swiss rallied from a set down to overcome Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final of the €134,920 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event.

In front of packed stands at the Tennis Club Zug, Stricker withstood 12 aces and broke his rival’s serve four times to secure victory in two hours and 10 minutes.

By winning the biggest title of his career and his first trophy on clay, the World No. 172 earned €18,290 in prize money, 125 valuable ATP Ranking points as well as a trophy showing the Zuger Chriesi (Zug cherries), the ultimate symbol of the city with about 32,000 inhabitants. Stricker previously triumphed on home soil in Lugano 2021 and in Cleveland, United States in early February this year.

World No. 365 Gulbis was bidding for his sixth ATP Challenger career crown, his first since the Terega Open Pau-Pyrenees in France in March 2020. He collected €10,770 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.
