Uchida Wins Oeiras Challenger Title

Kaichi Uchida of Japan has claimed his second ATP Challenger career crown by winning the Oeiras Challenger 3 hosted by the Centro Desportivo Nacional Do Jamor in Portugal. The No. 6 seed of the €45,730 clay-court tournament defeated Belgian Kimmer Coppejans 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.

Uchida battled his way to the title match with wins over  Germany’s Louis Wessels and Tobias Kamke, Michael Geerts from Belgium as well as Facundo Bagnis of Argentina.

The World No. 258 sent down six aces, saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own 10 break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 27 minutes.

“This is a special clay-court title for me. And since I didn’t expect it, I’m very happy. It was a great week, I defeated great players,” said Uchida, who already captured two ITF World Tennis Tour titles on Portuguese soil.

“I’m a different player here, I feel very comfortable and I like the courts.”

Uchida, who lifted his maiden Challenger trophy in Rio de Janeiro in December last season, earned €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Frenchmen triumph in doubles

On Saturday, Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul of France took the doubles title. The top seeds battled past second-seeded US-Americans Robert Galloway and Alex Lawson 6-3, 3-6, 15-13. The final lasted one hour and 22 minutes.

By winning their fourth team title of the season, Doumbia and Reboul split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
