Kovacevic Reaches Quarterfinal At Tallahassee Tennis Challenger

TALLAHASSEE/STARNBERG, April 22, 2022

Second round action is complete at the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger, with JJ Wolf, Zhizhen Zhang, Aleksandar Kovacevic and Michael Mmoh grabbing the finals spots in the elite eight.

In the first match on Thursday, US-American Wolf took on Alexander Ritschard from Switzerland. The first set went to a tie-break with Wolf finding his game and taking the opener 7-6(5). The former Ohio State star and five time ATP Challenger champion would continue to dominate, closing out the match with a final score of 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach his second consecutive Challenger quarterfinal after one hour and 45 minutes.

Meanwhile over on Court 1, Zhang and Evgeny Donskoy faced off for a second time in their careers. It was Zhang who would come out on top once again, besting the Russian 7-6(1), 7-5 in one hour and 44 minutes.

Next up, US-American wild card Kovacevic took to the court against No. 5 seed Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera. Kovacevic was able to take the first set 7-6(4), but the Chilean found his footing and grabbed an early second set break off the wild card. Ultimately it would be Kovacevic who came out victorious, upsetting the favourite 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 47 minutes to reach his first ATP Challenger quarterfinal since October 2021.

In the featured evening match, Mmoh faced top seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The 24-year-old was able to pull off the upset of the tournament, downing the World No. 95 from Argentina 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 after almost three hours of play.

Quarterfinal action gets under at 11:00 a.m. local time on Friday with four spots up for grabs on semi-final Saturday.
