Montanes Reaches First Quarterfinal Of The Season At San Luis Open

The second round of the $50,000 San Luis Open Challenger concluded on Thursday with second seed Albert Montanes winning 7-5, 7-6 over Laslo Djere. The Spanish veteran lost his service twice but broke his opponent’s serve three times to advance to his first quarterfnal of the season after one hour and 34 minutes. Montanes will take on Mohamed Safwat next. The 25-year-old from Egypt fired seven aces to beat Lorenzo Giustino 7-6, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes.

Seventh seed Hans Podlipnik-Castillo ousted Jordi Samper-Montana 6-3, 6-4. The world number 198 from Chile won 69% of his first service points and converted four of his nine break point chances to prevail in one hour and 27 minutes to set a quarterfinals meeting with Federico Gaio. The 24-year-old Italian, who knocked out top-seed Michael Berrer in the opening round, gained a comfortable victory over Nikola Milojevic, winning 6-3, 6-1 in 62 minutes.
