Pedro Cachin headlined Saturday’s semi-final action at the I Open Comunidad de Madrid by knocking out the tournament’s top seed Roberto Carballes Baena. On a sunny morning on Pista Central at the Club de Campo de Villa de Madrid, the in-form Argentine secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Cachin capitalized on seven of his 11 break-point opportunities and won 56 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 40 minutes.

“It’s always difficult to play against Roberto. He is a tough rival, physically and tactically strong on the court with a great game. I had a great day and played well. Maybe the serve could have been a bit better but overall I played at a good level,” Cachin told Tennis TourTalk.
The World No. 212 is enjoying a great run of form on Spanish soil, as he finished runner-up to Jaume Munar at the Andalucía Open in Marbella at the beginning of the month and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Costa Cálida Región de Murcia ATP Challenger last week. Cachin celebrated three Top 100 wins over the last three weeks.
“The match against Dominic Thiem in Marbella has been my best match of my career. Of course, it was Dominic’s first match after a long time without competing, but still he is a fantastic player with a very good attitude on the court. Altogether, the last three weeks gave me confidence.”
All-Argentine singles final
Later in the afternoon, Marco Trungelliti upset No. 2 seed Thiago Monteiro of Brazil 7-6(1), 7-6(5). The 32-year-old Argentine struck 10 aces and won 60 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 12 minutes.
Cachin is bidding for his third ATP Challenger career crown and first since his triumph at the Oeiras Open in Portugal last year. Trungelliti could lift his third Challenger career trophy, his first since Florence, Italy in September 2019. The head-to-head record of the two Argentines is tied at 2-2.
Pavlasek/Zelenay crowned doubles champions
In other action, Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic and Igor Zelenay of Slovakia captured the doubles title. The unseeded duo fought past No. 2 seeds Rafael Matos of Brazil and Spaniard David Vega Hernandez 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. The final lasted one hour and 29 minutes.
By winning their first Challenger team title, Pavlasek and Zelenay split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
