Kolar Advances To Quarterfinals At Oeiras Open

Three seeded players have booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the Oeiras Open 2. World No. 150 and second seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament, Zdenek Kolar, leads the bottom half of the draw. Kolar defeated Brazilian qualifier Oscar Jose Gutierrez 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Centro Desportivo Nacional Do Jamo.

The 25-year-old from the Czech Republic capitalized on five of his eight break-point chances and won 55 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 40 minutes. Kolar, who is bidding for his fourth Challenger career crown this week, his second in Oeiras and first of the season, will next take on Dimitar Kuzmanov of Bulgaria. The 28-year-old Plovdiv native eased past German qualifier Lucas Gerch 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 29 minutes.

In the top half of the draw, Jozef Kovalik edged past Frenchman Evan Furness 7-6(5), 6-2. The No. 7 seed of Slovakia converted three of his four break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 36 minutes. Kovalik will next play Czech veteran Lukas Rosol, who beat Kacper Zuk from Poland 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted 63 minutes.
