In his fourth appearance on the ATP Challenger Tour, Swiss teenager Jerome Kym has reached the quarterfinals for the first time. The 19-year-old rallied past World No. 177 Pavel Kotov of Russia 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in Wednesday’s second round of the Challenger Banca stato Città di Lugano.

Kym, who battled through the qualifying of the €45,730 ATP Challenger indoor hard-court tournament, overcame a bumpy start and became more solid the longer the match lasted. The World No. 1,025 struck six aces and won 70 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory one hour and 55 minutes.

Kym will next take on fellow teenager Luca Nardi of Italy. The 18-year-old Pesaro native edged out qualifier Aldin Setkic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 17 minutes.

In the top half of the draw, Marc-Andrea Huesler booked his spot in the stage of the final eight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 5 seed Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 25-year-old from Switzerland fired 16 aces, saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own four break-point chances to succeed after only 54 minutes. Up next for Huesler will be either local wild card entry Leandro Riedi or French qualifier Dan Added.

Marius Copil defeated Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen 6-1, 6-4. The World No. 257 from Romania, who earned his first title win since 2016 at the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event in Portimao, Portugal, won 61 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and four minutes. Copil awaits in the quarterfinals the winner of the encounter between fourth-seeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands.
