Manuel Guinard of France headlined Friday’s quarterfinals action at the Teréga Open Pau-Pyrénées by knocking out his compatriot Gilles Simon, No. 6 seed of the €90,280 ATP Challenger 100 hard-court tournament, 6-2, 6-2.

The World No. 229 saved the only break point he faced and converted four of his own six break-point chances to advance after one hour and three minutes. Guinard will next take on eighth-seeded Vasek Pospisil of Canada, who defeated French qualifier Antoine Escoffier 6-4, 6-2 in 74 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Quentin Halys emerged victorious from the all-French affair with Gregoire Barrere, rallying 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-2. The No. 7 seed fired 17 aces and won 84 per cent of his first-service points to succeed after one hour and 36 minutes.

Up next for Halys will be in-form Russian Roman Safiullin. The 24-year-old from Podolsk, who reached the semi-finals of the ATP 250 Open 13 Provence in Marseille last week, beat Constant Lestienne of France 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 44 minutes.
