Hamburg-born Marvin Moeller emerged victorious at the sixth edition of the DAIKIN Open held at the TennisBase Oberhaching and situated in the South of Munich, Germany. The World No. 487 has become the fifth singles champion from Germany in the history of the ITF Pro Circuit indoor event.
Both finalists didn’t drop a set en-route to the championship match when Moeller took on Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg. The 18-year-old Frenchman reached the semi-finals at the Junior Grand Slam events at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows last season. After beating the two German players Alen Mujakic and Sebastian Prechtel, who knocked off his No. 2 seeded compatriot Elmar Ejupovic in the first round, Gueymard Wayenburg defeated Italian No. 7 seed Riccardo Balzerani. In the stage of the final four, the former Aix-en-Provence native cruised past fellow Frenchman Valentin Royer.
Twenty-three-year-old Moeller, who is coached by former German tennis professional Julian Reister, eased past local youngster Max Hans Rehberg in the opening round, followed by wins against Pavel Nejedly from the Czech Republic and Alex Knaff from Luxembourg, who edged out the tournament’s top seed Dan Added of France in the stage of the last 16. Then, he made the last step to the final by defeating Italian qualifier Giovanni Oradini, who played college tennis for the Mississippi State University.

In a thrilling championship match, No. 6 seed Moeller withstood 13 aces from Gueymard Wayenburg and gained two breaks more. After saving one match point at the score of 4-5 in the deciding set, he secured a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory in two hours and 37 minutes. Following his maiden title win on home soil in Bad Salzdetfurth 2017, he lifted his second career trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour and pocketed €1,944 in prize money as well as 15 ATP Ranking points.
Gueymard Wayenburg, who is coached by Lionel Zirbel and practices in a training group with his countryman Benjamin Bonzi in Marseille, raised about 130 places and is ranked World No. 797.
