Canadians Philip Bester and Peter Polansky won their opening matches on Tuesday at the Drummondville National Bank Challenger, a $50,000 ATP Challenger Tour event being played at the René-Verrier indoor tennis club in Drummondville until March 20.

Polansky, who qualified for the Indian Wells main draw last week and lost to Fernando Verdasco in the first round, came from 1-3 down in the third set to defeat Hugo Nys of France 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. He will next face third-seeded Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands.

For his part, Bester played the evening session match against young US-American sensation Tommy Paul. The 18-year-old holds an ATP ranking of no. 225 after being crowned champion of the junior French Open and reaching the final of the junior U.S. Open last year. Bester jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to taking the first set 6-3. The second set was closer until Bester broke Paul’s serve at 3-3 after a long game to seal a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 61 minutes. He will face Spaniard Roberto Ortega-Olmedo, ranked no. 333 in the world, in round two.

Second seed Austin Krajicek defeaeted Evan King 7-6, 6-1 in one hour and 22 minutes to meet the winner of the match between two Candian wild cards Denis Shapovalov or Fliip Peliwo in the second round.
