Nishioka Notches Columbus Challenger Title

COLUMBUS/STARNBERG, February 1, 2022

Yoshihito Nishioka was crowned champion of the Tennis Ohio Championships hosted by Tennis Ohio in Columbus, United States. The No. 3 seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger hard-court tournament defeated 19-year-old Dominic Stricker from Switzerland 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final. Nishioka withstood 12 aces and broke the teenager’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 16 minutes.

The 26-year-old, who captured his maiden title on the ATP Tour 2018 in Shenzhen, China, advanced to the championship match with wins over his compatriot Yosuke Watanuki, US-Americans JJ Wolf and Jenson Brooksby as well as Emilio Gomez from Ecuador.

By lifting his sixth ATP Challenger career trophy, his first since 2018, Nishioka earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Sandgren/Torpegaard triumph in doubles

On Saturday, Tennys Sandgren from the United States and Mikael Torpegaard of Denmark, a two-time Columbus Challenger singles champion, captured the doubles title. The unseeded duo rallied past Luca Margaroli from Switzerland and Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 23 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Sandgren and Torpegaard split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
