Moreno De Alboran Upsets Verdasco At Blumenau Challenger

World No. 348 Nicolas Moreno de Alboran headlined Thursday’s second-round action at the Circuito Dove Men Care in Blumenau, Brazil by knocking out the top seed of the $37,520 ATP Challenger Tour 50 clay-court event, Fernando Verdasco, 7-5, 6-3.

The 24-year-old US-American won 76 per cent of his first-service points and converted four of his seven break-point chances to prevail in one hour and 50 minutes. Moreno de Alboran, a winner of three ITF World Tennis Tour singles titles last season, will next take on Igor Marcondes. The No. 5 seed cruised past 16-year-old fellow Brazilian and wild card entry Matheus Amorim de Lima 6-0, 6-1 in only 57 minutes.

Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina defeated home favourite Pedro Sakamoto 6-4, 6-3. The eighth seed outpointed his rival 69-53 after one hour and 44 minutes. Up next for Diaz Acosta will be his compatriot Juan Bautista Torres. The 19-year-old from Buenos Aires rallied from a set down to overcome Spaniard Jose Fco. Vidal Azorin 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 36 minutes.
