BRASILIA/STARNBERG, October 24, 2021

Following last week’s event in Campinas, the South American clay-court swing on the ATP Challenger Tour has arrived for its second consecutive stop in Brazil. The first edition of the $52,080 Aberto Da Republica is being held at the Iate Clube de Brasilia.

Top seed Federico Coria of Argentina opened his title bid on Tuesday with a 6-3, 7-6(7) first-round win over 19-year-old Italian qualifier Luciano Darderi. The World No. 69 saved the only break point he faced and capitalized on two of his own three break-point chances to advance after one hour and 29 minutes.

Coria, who is seeking his second ATP Challenger Tour title of the season following his triumph at the Czech Open in Prostejov in June, will next take on local wild card entry Wilson Leite. The 30-year-old knocked off Argentine Andrea Collarini 6-4, 6-4.

In the bottom half of the draw is led by Jaume Munar. The second-seeded Spaniard fought past Colombian alternate Alejandro Gonzalez 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Monday in exactly two hours of play and will next face Santiago Rodriguez Taverna of Argentina.

In other action, World No. 416 Gilbert Klier Junior recorded his first main draw match win on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 21-year-old Brazilian, a winner of four titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, edged out Colombian qualifier Alejandro Gomez 6-3, 7-6(4). Klier Junior withstood eight aces and broke his opponent’s serve four times to prevail after one hour and 34 minutes.

“It was a very tough match today,” Klier Junior said. “I had never faced the Colombian, but he always has good results. I took a 4-1 lead in the second set but was a little bit nervous towards the end, playing at home. But what matters is to get through the first round and do better in the next one.”

The Brasilia native will play Pedro Cachin in the second round. The 26-year-old Argentina beat Brazilian wild card entry Mateus Alves 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 59 minutes.
