SA Spring Open Draw And Seeds Announced

JOHANNESBURG, September 20, 2021 (Tennis South Africa Press Release)

The men’s and women’s singles draw for the second instalment of the SA Spring Open have been revealed at Ellis Park Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

Spearheading the women’s singles challenge of the $25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour combined event will be Valentini Grammatikopoulou, the Greek World No. 187, who is seeded number 1.

Behind Grammatikopoulou, is French World No. 198 Tessah Andrianjafitrimo and Japanese Chihiro Muramatsu seeded second and third respectively.

The country’s top ranked player and defending champion Chanel Simmonds will lead the South African charge in the women’s event. Simmonds was drawn to meet Japanese third seed Chihiro Muramatsu in the opening round.

Rising stars Zoe and Isabella Kruger will face a qualifier, yet to be named, and Jozi Open finalist Valeria Bhunu of Zimbabwe in their openers, respectively.

In the men’s singles, Russian top seed Konstantin Kravchuk will play South African Alec Beckley in round one and is seeded to meet Brazilian Mateus Alves (seeded No. 6) in the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Benjamin Lock, seeded second, will be looking to retain his title in Johannesburg. Lock will face a qualifier, yet to be named in the first round.

South African teen sensation, Kholo Montsi, is drawn to meet Italian Francesco Vilardo in the first round. Dylan Salton, last week’s Jozi Open semi-finalist, will face Canadian Kelsey Stevenson.

The tournament, a combined $25.000 ITF World Tennis Tour and wheelchair tennis Grade II tournament is staged in Johannesburg at the Ellis Park Tennis Stadium, with the finals scheduled for September 26.

The wheelchair tennis event will get underway on Wednesday, 22 September 2021.
